In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court of India has allowed women Short Service Commission (SSC) officers in the armed forces to receive pension benefits, even if they served less than the required 20 years. The decision applies as a one-time relief measure.
The verdict benefits women officers from the Army, Navy, and Air Force who were released after completing around 14 years of service. The court noted that many of these officers, inducted in 2007, were later considered for Permanent Commission but were not selected during evaluation boards held between 2019 and 2021.
The bench observed that new performance standards introduced in 2019 were implemented without giving officers sufficient time to adapt. It also highlighted that service duration should not have been used as a negative factor in assessing their eligibility for Permanent Commission.
As part of the ruling, eligible officers will now be treated as having completed 20 years of service, making them entitled to pension and related benefits from November 1, 2025. However, the court clarified that no salary arrears would be provided.
