In a major political development in Nepal, former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak were arrested in connection with last year’s deadly Gen Z protests.
According to police officials, the arrests were carried out following the recommendations of a high-level probe commission that investigated the violence during the September uprising. The protests had resulted in 76 deaths, including 19 people who were killed in police firing on September 8.
Mr. Oli was taken into custody from his residence in Gundu, while Mr. Lekhak was detained in Suryabinayak, Bhaktapur, near Kathmandu. Authorities confirmed that arrest warrants were issued after formal complaints were filed by the Home Ministry.
The arrests come shortly after a new government led by Balendra Shah assumed office. The new Cabinet has decided to act on the probe report, signaling a strong stance on accountability for the violence.
